Former to acting, he was a drummer for the band Phantom Planet (which opened for the band Incubus when they get on tour inside 2002). Despite allowing a band for an acting career, he however composes music for a select few films. He too appears in the music cd for the rock remix of "All About the Benjamins" by Puff Daddy. He besides contributed to Ben Lee's 2005 album Awake Is The New Sleep.

Schwartzman is the portion of a personal of population taking part inside film. Besides his parents, he is too a nephew of Francis Ford Coppola and cousin of Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, and Roman Coppola. He is the brother of actor/musician Robert Carmine (vocalist for the band Rooney), and is the stepbrother of cameraman John Schwartzman. His cousin-german is amusement publicizer Eric Schwartzman.
